Supporting early detection, better outcomes, and long-term wellbeing.
At Local Primary Care, we are committed to promoting womens health and inclusive access to care through our high-quality cervical screening services. Our aim is to support early detection and timely intervention — helping to prevent cervical cancer and improve health outcomes across Blackburn with Darwen.
Cervical screening (commonly known as a smear test) is a vital preventive health measure. It checks for the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) — a common virus that can cause changes in cervical cells, which, if left untreated, could lead to cancer. It is important to note that cervical screening is not a test for cancer, but a proactive step to help stop it before it starts.
Who Is Screening For?
Our services are available to anyone with a cervix aged 25 to 64, including:
- Women
- Some trans men
- Non-binary individuals assigned female at birth
You’ll be invited for screening:
- Every 3 years from ages 25 to 49
- Every 5 years from ages 50 to 64
If you are unsure whether you are due, or if you have missed a test, don’t worry — just get in touch with your GP practice and we’ll help you get booked in.
Why It Matters
Cervical screening can prevent up to 75% of cervical cancers by detecting abnormal cells early. These changes can be easily monitored or treated before they become more serious.
It’s one of the most effective ways to protect your long-term health — and it only takes a few minutes.
What to Expect
- The test is carried out by a trained nurse or clinician in a safe, private setting
- A small sample of cells is taken from the cervix using a soft brush
- The test usually takes under 5 minutes
- You’ll receive your results by post within a few weeks
We understand that screening can feel uncomfortable or anxiety-inducing. You are welcome to request a female clinician, and we encourage you to speak to us about any concerns or preferences you may have. Your comfort and dignity are always our priority.
How to Book
When you are due for a smear test, you’ll receive a letter in the post. From there:
- 1. Contact your GP practice to book an appointment
- 2. Choose a time that suits you — we offer weekend slots through our Enhanced Access Clinics
- 3. Let us know if you have any preferences or accessibility needs
If you think you could be overdue, haven’t received a letter, or have previously delayed screening — it’s never too late. Just give your GP practice a call.
Our Commitment
We’re proud to provide inclusive, accessible screening services that put patient wellbeing first. Whether it’s your first test or a routine check, we’ll take the time to explain every step and ensure you feel supported throughout.
Raising Awareness Through Social Media
We don’t just offer screening — we actively work to raise awareness and reduce stigma.
As part of our wider commitment to women’s health, we regularly run cervical smear awareness campaigns on our social media platforms. These campaigns help:
- Encourage open conversation around cervical health
- Share reminders, facts, and tips about the screening process
- Reduce fear and uncertainty through education and visibility
- Empower more people to attend their appointments
